SpaceX’s initial twin satellite mission has been performed. On Monday the satellite operator’s Falcon 9 rocket transported two telecoms satellites, one each for Asia Broadcast satellite service provider and Eutelsat.
The two satellites will both move into their orbiting positions 36000 kilometres above the equator utilising electric engines. The operation marks a continuation of the new trend in the deployment and design of spacecraft, providing thrust through utilising the acceleration of xenon ions. The large bulk of fuel tanks used in conventional engines is eradicated by the efficient electric engines.
