Emergency Satellite Solutions donated by ITC Global, BT and Intelsat for Vanuatu

While citizens of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Islands try to cope with intense communications and power outages incurred by Cyclone Pam; manpower, equipment and satellite capacity have all been donated by ITC Global, BT Group and Intelsat to aid restoration of Vanuatu’s vital communication networks.

To provide crucial broadband connections to disaster relief and humanitarian groups (including NetHope) operating on the site, BT is utilising Intelsat 18’s capacity positioned at 180 degrees east, linked through the terrestrial network IntelsatOne at their teleport in Riverside, California. Satellite operator ITC Global has provided engineering and technical support to aid restoration of connections at specified areas in Vanuatu. Additionally, BT has set up a standalone 24/7 ERT (Emergency Response Team) centre in Madley whose main function is to support the work of the installation teams that are operating to reinstate connections and power on the ground to Vanuatu in the South Pacific Islands.
