High Throughput Capabilities Considered by Telesat for Telstar 18 Replacement

An updated satellite to replace Telstar 18 is planned by Telesat, and it could include an element of high throughput. Telesat started operation in August 2004 with a 13 year lifespan and the new satellite which is soon to be finalised is planned to have significantly more power, but there are still some final details to be resolved. Significant funds for Telstar 18 (aka Apstar 5) were contributed by APT Satellite Holdings and as such they exert considerable influence on the project. Specific transponding rights for Apstar 5/Telstar 18 are held by APT Satellite and this will play a major role in the replacement satellite’s definition.
