ITU: “Half of the World’s Population will be Online by 2017”


The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) has reported that over forty percent of the world’s population are connected online, and before the end of this year the number is predicted to rise to 2.9 billion from 2.3 billion users in 2013.

By comparison, by the end of 2014 2.3 billion users will have access to mobile broadband, and a massive increase is predicted to take the total to 7.6 billion during the following five years. The ITU report revealed that currently there are three times the number of people with a mobile broadband connection as there are traditional cable connections. The report continues to explain that social media application numbers are soaring as their popularity increases due to broadband enablement.
