Turkmenistan’s first satellite launched on SpaceX rocket

On Monday an unmanned space vehicle, SpaceX, was launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station with a comms satellite on board which will be placed in orbit for Turkmenistan’s government – the Central Asian nation’s first. The falcon 9 space vehicle, 22 stories high, waited nearly one hour for the clearance of clouds in the sky before launching from its seaside pad at 23:03 GMT (07:30 local time).

A comms satellite was on board, constructed by Thales Alenia Space, which is a Finmeccanica SpA/ Thales SA joint venture. After orbiting, the 4.5 tonne satellite named TurkmenAlem52 will be the country’s first ever telecoms space vehicle broadcasting television and other services to over 1.2 billion individuals in North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia, as reported by Thales Alenia Space.
